With Putbus, Rügen, Germany’s largest island, has Germany’s youngest planned residential city. In 1810, Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus had the town around his palace planned on the drawing board and began extensive building work. Built entirely in the style of classicism, the beautiful buildings still shine in brilliant white today.
Immerse yourself in the world of music. The Rügen Festival spring regularly offers an extensive concert program in Putbus and at many other interesting venues across the island at the end of March. Every May, the Putbus Festival offers a varied musical program at various venues in Putbus. The highlight is regularly Pentecost Sunday with the „Music in the Park“. Artists of different genres make the castle park ring, at the same time the theater and orangery can be visited. The „musical picnic“ at various locations in the castle park has become a cult event.
Unfortunately, today we are looking in vain for the once magnificent Putbusser Castle. It was completely demolished in the early 1960s by government decision. An exhibition in the old smithy behind the royal stables is a reminder of the former magnificent building and center of the city. Let yourself be fascinated by the only theater on the island on a private stroll through the city, the former stables of the princely castle that have been converted into the largest event hall, the Marstall, discover the special features of the castle park or artistic works in the orangery.
